Our junior researchers took initiative and submitted their own contributions to relevant conferences in the field of education:
- Adela Chindris, PhD student at CODHUS, presented the paper “AI-simplification of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Assessment and Considerations” (co-author: Madalina Chitez) at the 14th International Conference Future of Education, Florence, Italy (19-21 June, 2024).
The main ideas in the paper:
Artificial intelligence is changing how we enjoy classic books by making them easier to read. This study looked at Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and showed how AI tools can rewrite the story using simpler words and pictures to help readers understand better. For example, the text was made easier for younger readers, changing from a 7th-grade reading level to a 2nd-grade level. These tools are helpful for students learning English or those who find reading harder. While these changes make the story more accessible, it’s important to use AI tools thoughtfully, ensuring readers also have opportunities to explore the original text’s deeper ideas and themes.

Inteligența artificială schimbă modul în care ne bucurăm de cărțile clasice, făcându-le mai ușor de citit. Acest studiu s-a concentrat pe Aventurile lui Tom Sawyer de Mark Twain și a arătat cum instrumentele bazate pe inteligență artificială pot rescrie povestea folosind cuvinte mai simple și imagini pentru a ajuta cititorii să înțeleagă mai bine. De exemplu, textul a fost simplificat pentru cititorii mai tineri, reducând nivelul de citire de la clasa a VII-a la clasa a II-a. Karka Csürös (PhD student), Florina Andercău and Roxana Delia Prohap (MA student assistants at CODHUS) presented the paper “An image is worth more than a thousand words”: an analysis of the interplay between reading texts and visuals in Romanian first-grade school textbooks” (co-authors: Roxana Rogobete and Madalina Chitez) at the 2nd Baia Mare Conference on Literature for Children and Young Adults, “Storytelling through images: the role of visuals in children’s and young adult literature”;; Baia Mare, Romania (10-12 June, 2024).

Visuals play a crucial role in teaching first graders how to read, as shown in this study of Romanian digital textbooks for the 2023-2024 school year. By analyzing the relationship between text and images in 14 textbooks for “Communication in the Romanian Language,” researchers identified three main types of visuals: static images, animated videos, and interactive exercises. Static images dominated, used primarily to explain or extend the meaning of new vocabulary. However, the complexity of some words paired with these visuals exceeded the students’ reading level, emphasizing the need for tools to ensure material appropriateness. This research highlights the importance of designing visuals that not only attract attention but also effectively support learning, setting a foundation for improving educational content across all grades and subject.

Imaginile joacă un rol crucial în predarea cititului elevilor de clasa I, așa cum arată acest studiu al manualelor digitale românești pentru anul școlar 2023-2024. Prin analizarea relației dintre text și imagini în 14 manuale pentru disciplina „Comunicare în limba română,” cercetătorii CODHUS au identificat trei tipuri principale de imagini: imagini statice, videoclipuri animate și exerciții interactive. Imaginile statice predomină, fiind folosite în principal pentru a explica sau a extinde sensul unor cuvinte noi. Totuși, complexitatea unor cuvinte asociate cu aceste imagini depășește nivelul de citire al elevilor, subliniind necesitatea unor instrumente care să asigure adecvarea materialelor. Acest studiu evidențiază importanța conceperii unor imagini care nu doar atrag atenția, ci sprijină eficient procesul de învățare, punând bazele îmbunătățirii conținutului educațional pentru toate clasele și disciplinele.
