Study on student-centered academic writing with AI support

As AI tools like ChatGPT become standard in student life, we asked ourselves: how can we guide students to use them ethically and effectively in academic writing? More than just generating text, can these tools actually support learning? Our goal was to design and test a student-centered framework for working with AI that builds writing skills instead of replacing them.

We presented the paper:

„EVAL-AI: A Student-Centered Framework for Developing Academic Writing Skills with AI Support”
(authors: Mădălina Chitez, Andreea Dincă, Velibor Mladenovici) at the International Conference “The Future of Higher Education – Evidence-Based Approaches and Practices”, Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania (16-17 May 2025).

The main ideas in the paper:

EVAL-AI is a structured five-step framework that teaches students how to use ChatGPT critically and reflectively to revise and improve their academic writing. It was tested using real student texts (from the ROGER corpus) and expert-written articles (from the EXPRES corpus), with a focus on phraseological complexity.

Key elements of the framework:

  1. Prompting – students give clear instructions to ChatGPT to revise their own academic texts
  2. AI-output analysis – they compare original and AI-revised texts
  3. Self-assessment – using a guided checklist to evaluate improvements
  4. Feedback exchange – with peers or based on AI suggestions
  5. Reflective synthesis – students decide what to keep, adopt, or reject, and explain why

The study shows that ChatGPT can enhance clarity, structure, and formality, especially in grammar and phrase construction. But it often reduces linguistic diversity, relying on formulaic and repetitive structures. Students learned not only how to benefit from AI input, but also how to stay in control of their own academic voice.
