On Romanian archaisms and regionalisms in school reading texts: paper at the International Conference „George Călinescu 125″, organised by the Romanian Academy

Our team presented the paper “De la hârtie la ecran:  provocările în utilizarea intrărilor de dicționar de date pentru dezvoltarea instrumentului LEMI de stabilire a lizibilității literaturii române” (authors: Mădălina Chitez, Roxana Rogobete and Karla Csürös) at the International Conference „George Călinescu 125″, organised by the Romanian Academy (18-19 June, 2024).

The main ideas in the paper:

Archaisms and regionalisms play a vital role in connecting children to cultural and historical aspects of language, but they also present challenges for readability in Romanian school texts. These linguistic elements, while enriching the narrative, can create barriers to understanding for young readers. This study delves into how such vocabulary impacts text complexity and learning, using the LEMI platform to analyze over 250 children’s texts. Researchers identified technical difficulties like digitizing archaic and regional words and their morphologies, as well as evaluating their influence on text comprehension. By refining tools to assess and adapt texts, the study balances the preservation of linguistic heritage with the need for accessible and engaging materials, ensuring that young readers are both connected to their cultural roots and supported in their learning journey.
