Romanian old school textbooks versus modern school textbooks: a linguistic analysis

Since we are interested in the linguistic analysis of textbooks, we examined how they were designed during Communist times compared to modern times. We presented the paper When old is better than new: contextualizing corpus-based readability in Romanian language textbooks for targeted digital intervention” (authors: Mădălina Chitez and Roxana Rogobete) at the International Conference „EUROCALL 2024 – CALL for Humanity, Trnava, Slovakia (26-29 August 2024).

The main ideas in the paper:

The article compares old and new Romanian language textbooks used in primary education, focusing on the linguistic complexity of the texts and their associated tasks. The authors note that the new textbooks feature higher text density and increased task complexity, exceeding the cognitive and educational level of students. In contrast, while older textbooks contained propaganda content, they were simpler and offered texts better suited to students’ age, along with clearer and more structured learning tasks. The results suggest that new textbooks are harder to understand due to complex instructions and tasks, which can negatively impact students’ performance and engagement. To improve the quality of modern textbooks, the authors propose using the LEMI digital application, which evaluates text readability and helps calibrate their complexity to better match students’ comprehension levels. In conclusion, the authors emphasize the need to reevaluate modern school textbooks and adapt them to avoid cognitive overload in students, while promoting more effective and accessible learning.
