Study on academic writing with AI in Romanian

Since we live in the AI age and intelligent tools such as ChatGPT start having an impact on our lives and are used intensively for academic writing activities, we wanted to find out how this affects writing academic texts into Romanian. We compared texts written by Romanian students with the same texts rewritten by ChatGPT, conducted the linguistic analysis and presented the paper:

  1. „Human versus AI-rewritten academic writing: a corpus-based comparative analysis of phraseological complexity in essays and scientifi articles”  (authors: Mădălina Chitez, Roxana Rogobete, Ana-Maria Bucur, Andreea Dincă, Simina Frîncu) at the International ConsILR 2024 – 19th International Conference on Linguistic Resources and Tools for Natural Language Processing, Alba-Iulia, Romania (14-16 November 2024).

The main ideas in the paper:

The study examines the differences between human and AI-rewritten academic texts in Romanian, focusing on phraseological complexity in essays (novice writers) and scientific articles (expert writers). While AI tools like ChatGPT improve clarity, structure, and phraseological sophistication, they tend to reduce linguistic diversity and often rely on formulaic and predictable syntactic structures. By identifying these AI-typical strategies, such as “AI phraseology”, specific lexical choices, and simplified syntactic patterns, this research provides valuable insights for detecting AI-supported academic writing in Romanian. Such findings can inform educators, researchers, and institutions in developing tools or guidelines to differentiate between human-authored and AI-assisted texts, ensuring academic integrity and proper use of AI in scholarly work.
