Study on Romanian L2 English Textbooks: Then and Now

As school curricula evolve and English language teaching becomes increasingly globalized, we wanted to understand how Romanian L2 English textbooks have changed over time and what impact these changes have on learners. We looked at the structure, linguistic complexity, and cultural content of textbooks used in Romanian secondary schools from different decades. We conducted a diachronic corpus-based analysis and presented the paper:

„Back to the Future: A Corpus-Informed Diachronic Analysis of Romanian Secondary School L2 English Textbooks”
(author: Mădălina Chitez) at the International Conference “Contemporary Trends in English-Language Studies” 2, University of Zielona Góra, Poland (3–4 April 2025).

The main ideas in the paper:

The study compares Romanian L2 English textbooks from older and more recent editions (grades 5–8), analyzing how they have evolved in terms of linguistic density, instruction design, readability, and cultural representation. A custom linguistic framework (LTAF) and two dedicated corpora (ROTEX, ROLEN) were used to measure and evaluate textbook features such as:

  • Words per page and layout clarity
  • Clarity and progression of instructions and tasks
  • Balance between text and visuals
  • Presence of local vs. global cultural content
  • Use of functional vs. literary texts

Findings show that while modern textbooks align better with global communicative trends (e.g., more functional language, multimodal input), they often overload students with dense text, vague instructions, and inconsistent scaffolding. In contrast, older textbooks, though more modest in scope, offered clearer structure and better linguistic pacing. The study highlights the need to rethink textbook design, ensuring that learners are supported cognitively and culturally in their language development.
